Health Professional Information:
More than morning sickness

Although NVP is often referred to as morning sickness, nausea limited to the morning hours occurs in only a small portion of women. Some women report having symptoms of nausea at any period of the day. Most women (80%) have nausea 24 hours a day.

Nausea or vomiting can be reported as early as the first week of conception. The severity of nausea and vomiting peaks between 11 and 13 weeks. It is a common belief that NVP ends by the 12th week of pregnancy. Actually, NVP stops by the 14th week in only 50% of pregnant women. It may persist until the end of the pregnancy in some cases.
